Sierra de las Nieves

A spectacular route in the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. From the starting point at the Quejigales car park we climb steeply through the forest, pausing to admire majestic pinsapo (Spanish fir) trees, unique to this area. Reaching the Puerto de los Pilones at 1746 metres, we walk through an area of ancient oaks, with sweeping views in all directions, before heading back down the Cañada de las Ánimas, with a stop at what is surely the world's best picnic spot. 

This circular walk can be extended to include the ascent of Torrecilla, the highest point in the National Park at 1910 metres. Not for the fainthearted!
